Assessing the need for radiation protection measures in artisanal and small scale mining of tantalite in Oke-Ogun, Oyo State, Nigeria

There is concern that work scenarios on the tantalite mining sites in Oke-Ogun, Oyo State, Nigeria may cause occupational radiation exposure of workers due to enhanced concentrations naturally occurring radionuclides some process materials. A prior radiological assessment activities was carried out determine if and which require protection measures. Samples materials involved, comprising (tantalum ores), soil waste rock were collected analyzed for activity 40K, 226Ra, 238U 232Th using a hyper pure germanium detector gamma-ray spectrometer. Radon mines also measured continuous radon monitor - Radon-Scout Plus (Sarad, GmbH). Activity 40K are below 10 Bqg-1 all samples but contain more than 1 226Ra 238U. Hence regarded as radioactive material (NORM) practice. The requirements planned situations apply but, basis graded approach, optimum measures vary from one mine another, ranging exemption authorization. Exposures underground pose greatest risks portend need regulatory control operations. results further underscore integrate with other health safety sector.
